Minor Service vs. Oil Change: Clearing the Misconception:

It’s a common misunderstanding to call an oil and filter change a minor service. While oil changes are absolutely critical for any internal combustion engine, a true minor service goes far beyond that.

Modern vehicles are complex, multi‑system machines. Simply changing the engine oil doesn’t even fully service one system, let alone the entire vehicle. Minor service has its roots in the intermediate service—performed between scheduled major maintenances—and it should always include a thorough inspection of all vehicle systems.

Unfortunately, many workshops and technicians (often in the rush for quick turnarounds) have blurred the line between an oil change and a minor service. In reality, these are two very different types of maintenance:

Oil Change Service → Drain and refill engine and replace the filter (at best).

Minor Service → Oil and filter replacement plus 20–130+ inspection points across the vehicle.

What a Proper Minor Service Includes:

A genuine minor service checklist covers dozens of items, such as:

Suspension checks (including ball joints, using proper vehicle positioning with respect to configuration)

Diagnostic scan and review of recall campaigns or technical bulletins

Tyre pressure adjustment—including the spare

Battery, cranking, and charging system analysis

Coolant concentration and brake fluid moisture testing

Cabin filter inspection and replacement (critical for air quality and health)

Cleaning sensors (MAF), checking lights, wipers, and safety features (Seat Belts and pre-tensioners, etc...)

Pressure testing the cooling system
…and much more.

Why It Matters:

Too often, vehicles I see for the first time show no evidence that these checks were ever performed.

A quick test for yourself:

Cabin filter → If it looks like a dusty bag from 10 years ago, chances are no one checked it.

Spare tyre → If it’s sitting at 10–15 psi instead of the required 40-60 psi (for space saver), it hasn’t been touched.

Service sticker → If old stickers and glue residue are left on your windscreen, overall attention to detail is missing.

If all three of these areas were neglected, your car likely only received an oil change—not a minor service. That’s when it’s time to find a different shop or mechanic. But if all three were done properly, treasure that professional—they’re rare, and they truly care about your safety and their reputation.

Your Car, Your Investment

For most of us, a car is the second‑largest investment we’ll ever make (sometimes even the biggest). The question is simple: how do you want your investment cared for?
