Understanding Labour Rates and Common Services

Different types of work require different levels of equipment, technical resources and diagnostic expertise. For this reason, Auto Papa applies different labour rates depending on the nature of the work being performed.

 Mechanical Repairs – $120.00/hour

General mechanical repairs include the replacement of worn or defective components where the cause of the fault has already been identified or is immediately apparent through normal inspection.

 Examples include:

  • Brake pad and disc replacement

  • Suspension repairs

  • Steering component replacement

  • Drive belt replacement

  • Cooling system component replacement

  • Battery replacement

  • Minor mechanical repairs and component replacement

Although these repairs still require professional workmanship, specialist tools and quality control, they generally do not require extensive diagnostic procedures or routine access to manufacturer technical information.

This labour rate reflects the practical nature of the work while ensuring every repair is completed safely, correctly and to a professional standard.

Diagnostics & Fault Finding – $160.00/hour starting from 3rd hour onwards. Initial call-out includes up to two hours at fixed price of $160 + travel where applicable.

Diagnostic work is fundamentally different from mechanical repairs.

Rather than replacing known faulty components, diagnostic work involves identifying the root cause of a concern using systematic testing and analysis. The outcome is based on technical knowledge, experience and specialised equipment rather than simply the time spent working on the vehicle.

 Diagnostic work may involve:

  • Professional scan tool operation.

  • Live data analysis.

  • Interpretation of Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

  • Electrical circuit testing.

  • Oscilloscope or multimeter testing.

  • Manufacturer service information.

  • Wiring diagrams.

  • Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs).

  • Hybrid and EV diagnostic procedures.

  • Multiple inspections and confirmation testing.

In many cases, diagnosing a fault is more technically demanding than replacing the component itself.

For this reason, diagnostic labour is charged at a higher rate to reflect the specialist skills, equipment and technical resources required to accurately identify the fault before unnecessary parts are replaced.

Scheduled Servicing – $160.00/hour (Fixed Labour Times)

Scheduled servicing is performed using generally accepted industry labour times rather than the actual time spent on the vehicle. This provides customers with consistent, transparent pricing while allowing every vehicle to receive the level of attention it deserves.

Unlike high-volume servicing centres, Auto Papa does not rush scheduled maintenance to meet time targets. Every service is carried out methodically using manufacturer-focused procedures, comprehensive inspections and professional quality control checks.

The labour rate for scheduled servicing is the same as the diagnostic labour rate because modern vehicle servicing involves much more than replacing engine oil and filters. A professional Log Book Service requires technical knowledge, access to manufacturer service information, specialised equipment and adherence to specific service procedures to ensure your vehicle continues to meet manufacturer requirements.

Depending on the vehicle and service schedule, this may include:

  • Accessing manufacturer service schedules and technical information.

  • Reviewing manufacturer-specific service requirements and procedures.

  • Validating previous service history where available and applicable.

  • Checking for outstanding manufacturer recalls or service campaigns where applicable.

  • Using professional diagnostic equipment to scan vehicle systems and identify stored fault codes.

  • Resetting service reminders and maintenance indicators.

  • Performing electronic service functions and maintenance resets where supported.

  • Using specialised equipment such as battery and charging system analysers, cooling system pressure testers, brake fluid testers, vacuum coolant filling equipment and other service-specific tools.

  • Performing vehicle inspections in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.

  • Identifying safety concerns, developing faults and maintenance items that may not yet be apparent to the driver.

  • Recording service findings and providing professional maintenance recommendations.

In many cases, a scheduled service requires the same level of technical resources, equipment and professional judgement as diagnostic work. The difference is that these procedures are performed proactively to maintain the vehicle, rather than reactively to diagnose a fault.

In many cases, a service may take longer than the standard labour allowance due to vehicle condition, additional inspection findings or the time required to perform the work to Auto Papa's standard. Unless additional authorised repairs or scheduled maintenance items are required, the quoted labour for the scheduled service remains unchanged regardless of actual time spent.

This approach ensures customers receive a thorough, manufacturer-focused service without being charged extra simply because additional care, inspection or technical procedures were required.

 My Commitment

Regardless of the labour rate applied, every vehicle receives the same level of professionalism, care and attention to detail.

I believe in charging fairly for the type of work being performed. Customers are not charged a specialist diagnostic rate for straightforward mechanical repairs, and equally, complex diagnostic work is priced to reflect the advanced expertise and equipment required to accurately identify the fault before unnecessary parts are replaced.

My goal is to provide transparent pricing, quality workmanship and lasting value, ensuring you pay for the service you need, not for services you don't.
